Rocksmith+ details new music licensing strategy

Hello Rocksmith fans!

Last Friday Rocksmith+ shared a very interesting video detailing a few key things.

  • Anthony Martinez is still around (as Music Content Director)
  • They recently reached an agreement with Warner Chappell Music
  • Upcoming DLC is on the way (Green Day, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Paramore, Meshuggah, and (more?) Joy Division)

The video also explains how licensing works which previously nobody outside of the studio understood, and probably isn’t going to anytime soon.

Here’s the fun part! Because they have publishing rights and not master rights that allows them the opportunity to bring us back to the early days of Guitar Hero and Rock Band and license cover songs!

The video also assures us that Re-records WILL NOT replace Master Recordings, as they will never end their pursuit to license these tracks to replace these covers.

The first covers being released this week (we imagine) will include

  • Van Halen “Jump”
  • Van Halen “Panama”
  • Elton John “Rocket Man”

Exciting!

There’s also a future video planned to explain their updated Song Release Cadence…

Are you excited to play Van Halen and Elton John covers in Rocksmith+? Does seeing Paramore and Green Day confirmed for this month change your subscription plans? What covers would you like to see appear in the future? Let us know!

  1. Just spent a couple hours exploring the new covers. Best update yet!! The covers that I played are all high quality. Just renewed my subscription which was going to end tomorrow. This is very promising indeed.

  2. I’m remembering that First guitar hero games had Cover versions too (Rockn’roll all night, Syncronicity II…). This is the same.

  3. Enter Sandman, Nothing Else matters, Cowboys from hell, Symphony of destruction and more!!!!! YEAAAAA

  4. Some cover songs are better than the originals so I wouldn’t be against it.

But until it doesn’t require a subscription and I can play it offline by actually purchasing DLC, I’m still out.

    1. Look at something like JamZone app, or Karaoke version website. With both they do the cover song versions where you can take out instruments and play along with it. So I’ve been doing that for a while. Anyways, you can get Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Zepplin, etc cause they are covers. If that opens the doors for RS+ to get all those and more under the “as made famous by” way, I’m all for it!! If they get the originals later, then great, but with bass/guitar and keyboard, I think this will help RS+ thrive. It will make me re-sub.
