Song Speculation: Pearl Jam begins life again on Rocksmith

Hello Rocksmith fans!

RollingStone222’s incredibly difficult clue has been solved and it has been revealed that we will FINALLY receive another pack from Seattle’s own, @PearlJam!

Let’s take a look at the clue, shall we?

This took awhile, but the password to unlock this GIF was “Cleveland”

This one was so hard that RS222 had to come help out…

Yeah, that did help…

Do we have a winner?

Very cool! This will bring the total @PearlJam songs in the Rocksmith Library to EIGHT!

What other songs are we hoping to see how up in next week’s five pack?

What follows is speculation

Did you know @RockBand has this whole album as DLC? Well, now you do…

two water songs in one pack

one of the best music videos ever

Definitely channeling Hendrix in this song a bit… Make me fries.

So there you have it, A newly minted Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, in the form of Pearl Jam II. Are you excited for five more songs from Eddie Vedder and the boys or are you hoping for something else in the coming weeks? Let us know!

  1. Yes, instabuy! Was really waiting for more Pearl Jam. Even Flow was really missing from Ten. Further hoping for Reviewmirror, Yelow Leadbetter and The Fixer, but really almost everything would be fun to play.

  2. Not sure if the list has been released yet. I like that Yellow Ledbetter. Would be nice to see Dissident and Animal.

  3. My wishlist for this pack would be:

    Release
    Go
    Not for you
    Hail hail
    The Fixer

Just for some variety across albums.

  4. Oh pleeeeeease yellow ledbetter, i want ubi to make me fries!!! So excited about this pack, ive seen pearl jam at Wrigley field twice (including the one with the almost 4 hr rain delay) so im used to waiting for pj, they never disappoint and im sure this pack and ubi wont either!

  5. More Pearl Jam is so welcome I’m screaming like a little girl who just got her first puppy! It would be impossible to mess this pack up, you could pick any 5 songs from their catalogue and it will be great. Cannot wait for this! Thank you Ubisoft for continuing to bring us great music! You keep releasing them and I’ll keep buying them 🙂

  6. This should have been a 10 pack at least. They could add first three albums and I would buy gladly. Would be cool to get alternate tuned songs like daughter or given to fly

    1. It’s always weird when I see comments from fans who, instead of being happy about what is being offered, are somehow disappointed that it’s not enough. First PJ pack was three songs; second here is five. That’s cool, right? NOPE sez you, TEN SONGS AT LEAST. So it’s discouraging when we think we’re overdue in making folks exactly like you happy, only to have you say it’s not good enough before you even know all of what you’re getting.

Please remember that we can’t put anything/everything we want into the game. What a pack “should” be for fans of an artist is sometimes at odds with what a pack can be in terms of licensing.

      1. I know greedy response but I appreciate the addition of a band I love and ten songs was just a Pearl Jam pun of sorts. I predict this pack will be great and epic

        1. Thanks for explaining. Hopefully you do like the tracks on offer this week, and remember — we can always go back and request more if these go over well. Pearl Jam has a deep catalog for sure.

        1. Dont get down Dan, ya cant please everyone and peeps will always want more than they have. Lucky for you Im a robot and have been programmed to sympathize and encourage good morale. Good job ubisoft team for finally nailing down again that dragon called Pearl Jam Dlc. Punch and pie for all.

        2. I did not know that. I thought it was always a three, but I guess the singles came first and when the third song cleared, they bundled it up.

This is why the saying around our office is “An Elliott never forgets.”

      2. Elliot and I had a quick chat about the likely tracks before he wrote this piece – I’m not a massive Pearl Jam fan, but I’m enough of one to have my own “wish list” of tracks. (all have been requested via the ap)

I’m willing to bet the 10 tracks I listed as being part of my “ideal pack” – don’t include the 5 that the licensing team were able to clear at this time. The 2 publicly announced already are not in it for eg.

It doesn’t mean I’m disappointed, or think that the tracks announced so far are “meh” – I’ll still likely buy the pack. If for no other reason than it might give the decision makers enough confidence in going after another pack, one that possibly includes the other songs I’d “prefer” to have.

Such are the issues with a popular artist that has put out 10 studio albums in the last 25+ years. Only managing to clear 5 songs (and the previous 3) is always going to leave some fans wanting more.

Heck, I saw them live 18 or so months ago and they did a 30 song set, they didn’t even get all the songs on my list in the concert – and they didn’t do all the songs in this pack.

Doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate the efforts involved in getting what has been possible.

      3. I for one applaud the effort, sir.

Just out of curiosity what is the average length of time from the point when you enquire about licensing an artists songs for the game until it becomes DLC?

How much of your own personal bias, if any, plays a part in the DLC selection?

        Thanks in advance.

        1. The average is hard to calculate, but months is more common than weeks. Recently we had a theme pack we were putting together that needed one key song to be cleared in a hurry. To my very pleasant surprise, we got it in a few business days, which broke the previous 3-month record handily. On the other hand, we just had something clear last month that was requested in 2011 before RS1 came out! So all the things we’ve ever asked for are still in play, and since we have to get two licenses for each (songwriting and the master recording), one party might clear quickly while the other might take a year…before they say no. Our team has weekly meetings with the licensing crew up in Montreal to discuss current status and priorities.

Personal bias rarely if ever comes into play. I mean, we all have subjective personal favorite songs, but some of my favorite artists are not in the game and might possibly never be. Like you guys, we’re happy when songs we like happen to make it in (“Inside Out” from Eve 6 was probably nobody’s favorite song, but I was thrilled…but it happened without my influence) but outside of judgment calls like “There’s more to learn in this song than the other one” or “this songs fits Rocksmith’s teaching methods well,” which is more a professional call than a personal one, there’s very little personal politicking. We might bring things up in a meeting for discussion, but not once has it been, “Well, if it’s your favorite band, we gotta do that, then.”

People sometimes roll their eyes when I say to use the request app…but I personally put requests into the app like everybody else. I hear a song on the radio or it comes up on Spotify or in a discussion, and I have the same reaction as everybody else: “Oh man, I’d love to see this in RS.” So I go and type it in, like everybody else. Most of my requests have not appeared; I think Spinal Tap was the only one that has made it into the library, but that was in motion before I started asking about it. Sometimes the requests show us songs that we didn’t know the fans would consider more important than the ones we know; other times the requests just confirm “yeah, we should continue chasing this one — what’s the status on that, licensing team?”

          1. Dan,

Thank you for your very open and detailed reply. It’s great to see a dev that’s not affraid to let us get a peek behind the scenes and a glimpse at the inner workings. I was quite pleased to see you had left such an informative reply when I woke up this morning.

Is there a way that I might reach you in regards to some suggestions for additions to RS2014 or the next iteration of the game. I’ve been a sucessful guitar teacher for more than 10 yrs and I have some ideas that you might find interesting if you and the team havent already thought of them yourselves.

            Thanks!

            1. Elliott beat me to it — that thread he linked in the official forums really is ground zero for suggestions about gameplay, features, and anything like that. It has been going for years, but it has also been our main resource for any time we talk about functionality — I am regularly asked “What does the community like and dislike about this part? What’s on their wish list for this other thing?” And that thread, quite honestly, is the first place I turn. It was very helpful with Remastered.

      4. Many of us are happy , don’t worry about the whiney dickheads , you know the saying you can’t make everyone happy all the time. Just keep doing what you do , don’t be discouraged by people that can never be satisfied no matter what you offer them. Focus on the rest that are pleased with what you do and how you do it. I personally love what you guys offer its far more then I ever expected , even if another dlc never came out again what you have given to us has been more then worth the investment over and over again.

      5. I’d like to jump in on this as well. When I first purchased Rocksmith (2015) I immediately went online and requested a whole lot of Bob Marley. Didn’t think it would happen as I did not believe anyone involved with Rocksmith (fan or staff) would care anything about reggae. After a year or so I got Marley in last year’s Anniversary Pack. While it wasn’t a song I would choose, as a fan, I didn’t care. It was something. That’s good enough. There is so much music out there, it has to be recognized that there really is no “Perfect Pack.” Ubisoft did a great job with Hendrix, SRV, and RATM. There were still folks saying, this song should have been there, or that song should have been there. When Ubisoft delivers big packs like that (6+ songs) something will get left out, as you can’t get the artists whole catalog. For example, if Van Halen ever showed up, I’d love to get 5150, The Full Bug, Baluchitherium, or D.O.A. It’s Highly unlikely any of those “not so well known” songs would make it in a pack, however; to have something from the band is amazing enough.

I hope that when people comment, the writer is not SERIOUSLY, saying Ubisoft is not doing a good enough job. You all are amazing. I had a complaint last year about the variety in genres. Shortly after that, Brooks N Dunn came out, Marley, OutKast, the Jackson 5, and SRV came out. This year has been even more exceptional. Add to that, I put in for Green Onions back in 2015. This all goes to remind everyone to be patience, like many of us patiently waiting and hoping for Maggot Brain. If it’s meant to happen, it may take time. I’m applauding Ubisoft for giving us a taste of everything from Christian Rock to reggae, to blues, country, and a touch of hip hop. Keep doing what you’re doing. And you all have introduced me to new stuff as well. I didn’t know who the Black Keys were until Rocksmith. Love them now.

Quick question though. Dan, do you all have a list of the most requested artists who have yet to make an appearance in Rocksmith? (key words, “have yet to make an appearance”.) I’m curious what that list would look like.

      6. I find it interesting that a community developer would give such a snarky response to someone that is saying they would easily pay for more songs. I get that you’re probably defensive since you have to defend most of the downloads recently, but check your attitude. Without these people, you have no job, this site has no traffic, no funds for licensing.

        1. Oh grow up, pal. We’re all human and I find it interesting and slightly hypocritical that you would complain about the very thing you yourself are doing right now.

          1. He rails on someone for a comment and I’m the one that needs to grow up? The fanboys on this site amuse me.

  7. It would be great to have Nothing as it seems or Immortality but I guess it’s just wishful thinking.

  8. I agree that the video for “Do The Evolution” is one of the greatest ever, I would even say that it is better than the song. Todd McFarlane’s involvement is pretty obvious, as it is in the animated section of Korn’s “Freak On a Leash” video.

I’m guessing “Daughter” will make the cut. I’d kind of like to get “Wish List”, not so much for the guitar but because it was the first song of theirs I liked.

  9. Some really terrific guitar parts in many Pearl Jam tunes. My favorite album is Yield, would be great to see a track or two show up tuesday… I really like No Code too… I think I’ll be happy no matter what tracks are part of the pack though! yeehaw!
