Speculation: Rocksmith celebrates Canada Day with Billy Talent

Welcome Rocksmith fans!

Next Tuesday will be another somewhat historic release for Ubisoft as they become the first music game to license not one, but FIVE songs from Toronto (Mississauga) melodic “punk” rock band, Billy Talent!

Back in 2009 singer, Ben Kowalewicz did an interview regarding the special edition of their album Billy Talent III. The main point of mentioning this, is the addition of an extra disc containing the guitar track removed from the songs and included tablature for all the tracks!

For an extra $10 or so, fans can pick up the deluxe version which includes a second disc of the album’s 11 songs stripped of guitars and the notes for all the tracks, so budding musicians can play along and try to match guitarist Ian D’Sa riff for riff.

This was actually believed to be some starch evidence towards why neither Guitar Hero or Rock Band were able to license music from the Canadian quartet.

Anyway, yesterday @DanAmrich as always had a puzzle for us, not too hard this time but fun all the same.

A scene from Hardcore Logo which featured a band named… Billy Tallent (get it because it’s mispelle- yeahhh).

That’s an abridged version but check out the forum for Dan’s explanation.

Now which songs would you expect to be included? Well here’s our picks:

A fantastic No Quarter rip off

Their breakthrough hit

dat intro riff

🙁

Are you excited for the debut of Billy Talent? Are you still trying to figure out why anyone would sing like that? Let us know!

  1. hmmm. Kinda poppy bubblegum punk, but definitely better than that Sum 41 garbage from a few weeks ago.

  2. The best part about his voice is it doesn’t sound like Chad Kroeger’s. I hope they include “Surrender”. So what do the poutine people do on Canada Day, anyway? Celebrate their Independen….er, never mind.

  3. For an added Canada Day Bonus would love to see
    Coney Hatch
    Max Webster/Kim Mitchell
    Platinum Blonde
    !!!!

  4. If they really wanted to represent the Canadian punk scene they should have gone after some Propaghandi (not that Propaghandi would ever appear in some machination of corporate overlords brainwashing kids into … uh … fighting wars … or something? Boy that one really got away from me there!).

    But seriously. Propaghandi.

    1. Recently ubi SF announced they was working on a new IP. The studios being pretty small i wonder if that mean the death of rocksmith… I hope not. It. Such a awesome game

  5. didnt we just get this band a few weeks ago oh yeah that was sum 41 , not one to complain but seriously some one who grew up on op ivy (ska punk) black flag and the misfits( hardcore punk ))and other real punk bands this so called punk music really does nothing for me and i agree with most here the voice has to go worse then the sing from a7x

  6. Never heard of them, listened to the you tube videos… all seems to be just missing "something". I'm listening thinking yeah this is alright actually…*seconds pass*…oh. Its just a bit flat, pass from me this week

  7. I’m so happy! I never really thought Billy Talent would make it to rocksmith but this is a pleasant surprise! It’s been a great month of songs for me with Sum 41, Godsmack, and now Billy Talent!

  8. I would predict:

    Red Flag
Fallen Leaves (these two were the songs I actually heard before looking them up for Rocksmith, aka I think they might have had some bigger airtime -unsure-)
    Surrender (most likely slower song)
Viking Death March (something from the new album)
Try Honesty (apparently first success song)

  9. I appreciate the variety, but I won’t be buying this. Along with Cake, I just can’t stand the vocals. Music is great, but the vocals just ruin it for me.

Related, it would be cool if Rocksmith had an option to hear ONLY the guitar or bass tracks without all the other sounds in a song. That would be pretty sick. (And maybe then I’d play Cake and Billy Talent hahaha).

    1. I agree,

Being the fact that I’m living in Canada I’ve seen Billy Talent way more times then I would have liked; it seems like they are playing every second music festival here. I gotta give credit were credit is due though, they do sound ‘better’ live then on the studio tracks, the music is harder and louder plus the singers voice is drowned out.

I’m not usually one to complain, but IMO this is a bad representation of Canadian Music, I think UBI could have done far better to celebrate Canada day, with even a mixed pack of artists with the likes of BTO, Triumph, Trooper, Loverboy, Bryan Adams ETC.

If Billy Talent was released in two weeks, I wouldn’t be saying anything about it, I know there are going to be a few people that are happy about this DLC being released, although IMO I think a 5 pack is a bit excessive, until now I wasn’t even aware Billy Talent had any major popularity outside of Canada.

      1. People would be pretty angry if Bryan Adams only got a single (same with BTO). The other bands wouldn’t sell as singles (as much as I like Triumph). If anything there should be a Guess Who 5 Pack! /opinion

        1. Well Bryan Adams and BTO packs would be great. I’m not saying I only want a singles pack and I’ll agree that Trooper maybe would not sell well outside of Canada, but I think Loverboy – ‘Turn Me Loose’ and possibly ‘Working for the Weekend’ would. I’m not personally the biggest Triumph fan, but I do like some songs like ‘Fight the Good Fight’. Alot of great Canadian bands have been mentioned in the comments section which falls outside of the punk rock genre, hopefully we will see one or two some day.

      2. So many great Canadian bands and we get Billy Talent? Why not just give us Celine Dion? I’d be equally disinterested. How about The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Tea Party, Matthew Good just to add a few to the list that Forge already gave us. All of which would have been better than this. Makes me sad to be a Canadian. (un)Happy Canada Day 🙁

  10. Surrender has been my all-time favorite by Billy Talent. If it’s in this pack I’ll cry tears of joy.

  11. If it was a free DLC, it would be OK. Or 5 for the price of 1 (max 2) songs. That would give the band more exposure and iTunes/concert ticket sales, like with the unlockable songs in the game. But to charge the same for this pack than for those of well known bands… Not for me.

      1. I’m sorry Elliot, I don’t want to ever be negative about DLC because there is always an audience that likes the band, but Facebook likes don’t make them worthy of Rocksmith.

Miley and the Biebster have Facebook likes, should they be on here too?

When you look at the top 40 requests, then you look at the types of bands that get on here, especially in the last 3 months, none of it is in the same league. People want to learn hard rocking tracks. They are getting 90’s junk where all the band has sleeve tattoos, soul patches and ear plugs.

Don’t get me wrong, like I said there is always going to be an audience for it, and I have a multitude of content I still can’t play, but I personally don’t consider any of this to be “Rock” worthy of Rocksmith.

But hey, this is the internet, everyone is entitled to their crap, ill informed, wrong-headed opinions right? 😆

        1. Miley and the Biebster have Facebook likes, should they be on here too?

Sure, why not? Miley Cyrus had a 5 Pack on Rock Band, and I’m not embarrassed to admit I’ve tried to learn a few Bieber songs on guitar. His guitarist Dan Kanter is actually a big fan of Phish.

Thanks for sharing your opinion though

          1. It’s what a good forum is for. Say what you think so long as it moves the discussion forward.

And I have to say that I owe Rocksmith for introducing me to Silversun Pickups and a few other bands I had never heard before.

It has made me go searching for new music after years with my blinkers on.

        2. If a band has a lot of Facebook fans, a song has a lot of plays on YouTube, or a lot of subscribers on Spotify, that certainly factors in.

Rocksmith is designed to appeal to as many people as possible, and if the studio thinks that the material is going to be interesting and motivational to some of those people, it’s up for consideration. But a wide appeal is one part of what would make something “worthy” of Rocksmith.

As always, to each their own.

  12. This is the one I am hoping for but there are a lot of good ones that I would get.

    httpvh://youtu.be/ttq6x4NNhyk

  13. Not for me. I have heard of them, and they are very popular here in England with people about 10 years younger than me (I’m 37).

  14. Never heard of them.
When I saw Canada Day, I was kinda hoping for Theory of a Deadman…oh well. I can always request a song or two

  15. I did not know this group, it sounds good, but in my opinion there are other bands that deserve to have a 5 song pack… I pass this week…

  16. Neil Young would have done way more credit to your country’s awesomness. Sorry, but we have plenty of crappy bands here in America too, and people who like crappy music. God love them!

    1. I actually held off listening to them for several years because of their name. I eventually listened to their song “Surrender”, and immediately regret not listening to them earlier.

  17. Has anyone outside of Canada heard of these people? His voice is too annoying to even think of buying

  18. Not bad eh , hope this means our lady peace is getting closer because i keep requesting them. They sort of remind me of OLP but I would kill Tim Horton for some

      1. Devil In A Midnight Mass’s main riff is very fun to play! I already know how to play it but I think I’m not the only one with a crush for this riff 😛

  19. Would just like to say that you should really listen to these songs before you completely dismiss them. Ian D'Sa is a talented dude who I seem to see at 3 shows a month (so he has good taste!)
