    1. There’s something to be said for different types. Classical, hollow or semi-hollow bodied, resonators, lap steel, baritone, tenor, electric. But since I’m an actual luthier (I can build all those) the one thing i don’t particularly recommend is any sort of acoustic-electrics. They’re ok, but they all have inherent problems that boil down to one thing, what makes an electric sound best doesn’t make for an acoustic to sound best and of course vice versa. So the tonal qualities for one side or the other if not both (which is more common), will be comprised. That being said unless you want something specific the difference in general between a $100, $1,000, and $10,000 guitar is that you are basically paying 10x’s as much for something that will only play and sound 10% better. Really it’s true. I’ve discussed this with over a hundred other luthiers, no one disagrees (but a specific thing is still a specific thing if you have to have it and there are a few caveats) However you will want it set up right of course. If you know what you’re looking for used instruments are a better deal, might even get it with upgrades you want already done. And this really turns into a long lecture with a lot of detours. Just be smart, figure out what you need and want, do some research. I can’t build anything that I can sell for less then four figures but it doesn’t mean you should pay it. It’s the time and craftsmanship that the cost is for. So unless you need something special for whatever reason, go find an awesome deal. I once found an 80s white silvertone Strat in a thrift store it was in the window, only reason I walked in. l bought it for $20 to tear apart and use for a few things including testing out different pickups (swimming pool routed body, makes it easy), honestly I’ve seen, heard and played instruments that cost a lot, at least over 200x’s what I paid that didn’t sound that good. I still don’t know if I’m happy or mad about it. I just periodically swap out the og pick guard for another one I’ve loaded. Might love the new pick ups but they go into another guitar, eventually the og gets dropped back in. I won’t break down what they are or why they are worth hunting down but I own 2 acoustics (a 6 & 12 string) from the 70s that people like but if they new I only paid $200 for each and where made by the same company and same builders and same setup as they’re guitar that cost at least 10x’s that amount and mine sounded better then some no contest, they would not be happy. I’ve been lucky and picky. Names mean less then what people say they do, go by feel and your ear. Good case in point Gibson’s are the most over priced for quality out there for years. A guy I know had half a shipment show up in they’re cases (not a box), all with head stock breaks. It’s why they paint them all black, it’s to hide what they are doing with cheap materials. Funny thing is Gibson wants you to destroy them (or maybe send them back) but the guy repaired the now free ones and they all played better then the ones that didn’t break plus assuming he did the repair right (I’m sure he did) the glue is stronger then the wood so now the guitar is more reliable. Not as valuable but he got at least one free guitar and gave his kid one, think he sold the others cheap Under the table. Don’t pay to much just for a logo. That’s the thing. Although I have come across some really nice vintage stuff, that’s another story.

  1. Praise Rocksmith for including Cat Stevens for first time in a music game. I really enjoy some of these acoustic songs they really make you a better player since there isn’t any distortion or effects to cover up sloppy playing. Bring on some Simon and Garfunkel next and Leonard Cohen,
