PC Version of Rocksmith Delayed (May 2012?)

In completely unsurprising news @NaoHigo producer of Rocksmith posted on Rocksmith’s Facebook page that the PC version is most definitely being delayed, as for how long “The current plan is to have the PC version ready in May.” This is especially bad news for Xbox owners outside of North America as the PC version (which was expected to be released December 13th, 2011) was there last hope of playing the game on their console before the non-existen Europe release date.

As you can see, development seems to be very much geared towards DLC and patching many of the complaints being voiced about the current incarnation of Rocksmith.

How do you feel about this decision? Should they be focusing on pleasing the non-console owners or is supporting their install base with new content and solutions to their problems a more prudent issue. Let us know in the comments below and be sure to come back tommorow for December 13th’s DLC announcement which may have that heavy music you kids want.

Or better yet, for those of you that bought guitars but don't have a game yet – invest your $80 in an amplifier and find some free lessons on youtube or the Guitar Tricks website. While there is no scoring system for the lessons, they are fun to play along with and you might even learn to craft a song or two song of your own.

mautterback

Grrrr. Hire more devs dangit!! Iv been waitin years for this! I dont want to but a consol and im not going to. I guess its just a matter of time till others come out with similar games. Probably will be better also.

Whip

@ jo user, I agree with jo. I have amplitube 3. No lag ( I did download aso4all ( something like that) audio driver) gets rid of latency issues!!
I also have various amp modeling software for my iPhone ( ishread, ampkit, amplitude, jam up) Witch is all software . No lag whatsoever!!
Was looking forward to rocksmith. Sure it won't be long before other company's release similar games.
Happy new year..

David

Having just received my "receipt" for Christmas that my wife bought at Gamestop (who said it would release in January), I am completely hacked off about this. I, like many others, use software with my guitar through my PC. I don't want to move from the room I play guitar in and into the living room where the Xbox is hooked up. I will be getting my money back on the pre-order from Gamestop and I will not be buying any Ubisoft products in the future. I thought this was going to be a good piece of gameware, but of course as with all software, it is either buggy or never hits a deadline. What a bunch of crap!

usamare

May of 2012 suggests that they haven't even started on it yet.
That's a pretty major letdown to be sure. It's one thing to have a delay, but quite another to arbitrarily ignore the platform. With xbox 720 coming out in 2012 (don't buy a 360 now) it's probably best for pc users to consider it vaporware and look for something else. Maybe Guitar Pro has some new improvements in the works.

joe user

no surprise here. UBI, EA, and the others do not want to pay developers to work on 3 or 4 or more platforms. the lower the number of platforms the higher their profit margins. its simple economic douchbagery.

Not enough pre-orders for PC = management saying "we didnt hit the PC version pre-order quota so eff those PC guys and get to work on the console versions that were far from polished on initial release"

If they get enough blow back they may yet release a PC version, but i sure wont be holding my breath.

joe user

following up.

the publishers need to realize this isnt just another FPS war game for the ages 16-35 market. This game has the potential to reach a HUGE number of people, young and old, who simply want to learn guitar and who may not necessarily own a gaming console.

Most homes in America have a computer capable of playing a basic 3d game (no not crysis, but maybe quake3 or call of duty 2). These users want to learn guitar but do not want to buy a console to do so, especially when they were promised from the beginning that a PC version would be available (even if delayed).

By sticking to strictly consoles the publishers are severely crippling this game's ability to perform in the market.

The simple fact is, not everyone who wants to learn guitar is going to be a console owner. However MOST already own PCs capable of 3d gaming, and were waiting for the PC version of this game to hit the market.

Sure, a few people who REALLY want to learn guitar may begrudgingly buy a console so they can play this game. But there are a lot more who would buy the PC version if it were available, but will now buy nothing.

Brilliant market insight UBI! Yes, your sh|t really does stink.

Simon Rockman

Ubisoft should sort out the naming issues in Europe if they can't ship the PC version until May.

Sid

"We are a small development team"
Screw this game… i wont buy any product from a company who deals in millions but cant hire staff to meet deadlines
READ: Lamest excuse ever heard

And no i definitely wont "invest" in an Xbox/PS3 for a company who doesnt believe in providing customer satisfaction

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Yes, I believe in Consumer Rights
I was looking forward to this game… but not anymore…

Dear Joanne(and every one in this situation),
My Sympathies
May he/you get an even better Christmas Present
God Bless!

Jim

Well that chaps my ass. I don't have a game system, I don't want gaming system, I want a pc version. Jesus, hope someone comes out with something

fillo

Oh snap! I was planning on getting the PC version from the "alternate market" and getting the USB cable from best buy or amazon. This wrecks my well-crafted plan!

The way I see it, provably a whole lot of people thought the same (obviously).

I'll entertain some speculation and say that maybe the boys from Ubi figured this out as well, that the PC version would be stolen as heck and only thing they would sell for PC would be USB cables and discount versions a year from now. So, instead of taking our crap, they've decided to milk the console cow and give the PC crowd the finger.

For what I see, there's a lot of people stuck with brand new guitars, little (or none) playing skills and a lot of will to learn (play). This makes me go out in a limb and say that most of the angry posters here that actually own xboxes or PS3s will break soon enough and buy the console versions of the game. Some of those who don't own a console, will own one soon enough, it's a matter of getting a taste of the game on one =) and having some extra $$ around.

I was wating for the PC version, since I'm on the EU and we won't be getting anything (PC,Xbox,PS3) any time soon. Since there is no PC version, I'll just ask a friend to bring me a PS3 version from best buy or something. I'm getting my fix this christmas no matter what!!

DaveB

Sorry but i prefer spend my hard earned money to buy guitar stuff, or anything else that can be useful for me, than trowing hundreds dollars in a console i have no use for except this game.

For me it's PC version or nothing.

Minyassa

Amen, exactly the same situation here. Ridiculous to spend hundreds more when I have the machines I need already and it's just the software I'm waiting on.

Avery

If you are willing to pay for a guitar, cable, the GAME and those accessories then just learn on your own. There is plenty of tabs and videos on youtube to boot. The game is not going to make you a great guitarist. It will help on some things but not what everyone is thinking. So if everyone owns a computer then thats all you need. Of course a guitar too. Furthermore its a GAME, so all those people that say they don't play games is lying.

vesolc

it's a bad news…i wan't to buy it for christmas too…developers are forgeting, that there are more pc users, than consloe users…anyway they need time for dlc to make for consoles…it makes me sad and probaly i'll just download the torrent…anyway, they wanna sell this to console people…

Joanne

Dear Nao,
Please tell my 10 year old grandson why he won't get this for Christmas. He has a WII and a PC.

xKoBiEx

Have to agree that Ubisoft's decisions have always been strange, especially when pertaining to PC Gaming. This "game" is a piece of software that they acquired from someone else in an almost finished state for PC/Mac only release. Then they convert it to PS3/Xbox only and give excuses over why they aren't releasing the computer versions.

As to the latency/lag/insert whatever other lingo you want to use, PC Gaming has always proven to be more reliable with sound production and transfer. I don't think that is the real point where Ubisoft missed the boat, though, because they didn't do their testing properly when they released the console versions which they could have coded to fix any sound transfer issues.

Sales of most games and software is big in North America BUT almost every release of a game exhibits much larger numbers on a wordwide market, particularly Europe, and Ubisoft messed up…or did they? When you have a hyped up game that everyone wants to play, you release it to everyone you possibly can. Ubisoft didn't which means they new at release that they did not have a polished product. That's what happens when you port something that wasn't meant to be on a console in the first place.

yack_ass

Well this su*ks! Anywho, for all of you that have bought guitars.
Download a guitar pro and start strumming.

The game won't make you in to a overnight Hendrix. If it does in fact come out in May, you have enough time to learn the basics. And then use the game for exercises which could be borring. Then again there is tons of stuf on the interwebs to make guitar practice fun.

Still want the PC version. Why should I go and buy a Xbox or PS3. Don't need them, don't want them. PC is tops!

Zoidbort

Yeah this is ridiculous!
Dammit I wanted the PC version…
WHY even release the game at all if it plays so horribly on both consoles?
I mean the testing team HAD to of known these issues existed, right?

Shawn

*sigh* I was sooo holding out for the PC version. Told the wife that was all she had to get me for Christmas. Had a feeling this would happen and got a cheap Xbox for Black Friday. Not too bad because the game dropped to fifty bucks that day too. Still very disappointed in the tight fisted management at Ubisoft for their lack of vision and support for a real game changer.

Avery

They brought the game out on the Xbox so get a console if you want to play the game.

Mark

After several people, myself included, bought guitars in preparation for the PC version, Mr. Higo decided it's more important to focus on DLC rather than getting the PC version out. Most PC folks are older and don't like being brushed aside. I cancelled my Netflix subscritption for this kind of crap. We have an XBox 360, but I'm hearing there is lag time that the PC version was supposed to fix. So it's either no Rocksmith or an XBox 360 version with lag time. You just really turned off a lot of customers, with kids, to focus on DLC. The kids are the ones using the console versions, but the parents have the purse strings.

vesolc

Get the game for Xbox360…
riiight…to get the hole xbox for one game, no thanks I already have PC and it's better than xbox…i already bought the guitar…and now…i decided i don't need it to buy for christmas, because they don't wanna sell it! the dlc is more important…well, for me it's important to support developers, but not like this…if they wanna make dlc for consoles before PC version…well, they'll get from me zero money…there will be torrent 🙂

joe user

The PC version WILL suffer from the same "lag" or "delay" users are getting on the consoles. Several years ago a developer released a program called "Amplitube" which was effectively a pre-amp and pedal program for PC audio.

The sound was great and you had lots of control an immediately felt like a rock star with high dollar toys, but there was/is a several millisecond delay after you played a note while the computer processed the sound then plays it back. Unlike solid-state amps and pre-amps and pedals which use hardware solutions to modify the input sound at the speed of light, software solutions must rely on the processing power of the host system to modify the sound.

The Ampltube/software pre-amp technique is basically what Rocksmith uses to add distortion, reverb, etc to the input sound. Depending on the speed of your CPU and overall system speed the delay experienced may vary by a few microseconds. But I'm a guy with a i7 2600 3.4ghz quad core w/ all the bells and whistles, and amplitube still produces a noticeable delay–any anyone who can play even moderately fast will find themselves a note or 2 ahead of the audio coming out of the speakers.. simply a fact of life for a software based pre-amp.

This isnt bad news–the user experience will be at least as good as the consoles, but just know what you're buying before you pre-order, and don't expect the world when its 6 months or more late.

joe

i have amplitube metal, fender, and the jimmi, and there is no lag what so ever and im on a lenovo g560,…you got burned some place, remember friend, computers are way more advanced than consols

joe user

not burned at all. i said "a couple years ago," and it was v1 of amplitube and on an old athlon3200+. Also not 'metal' or whatever ver youre using. But, youre right, computers are faster today and software can always be improved.. maybe new versions utilize fancy hardware audio controllers i dont own, etc. Was simply trying to illustrate the point that software is never going to be as good as a hardware solution.. maybe a g560 whatever is good enough.. just thinking people should have some understanding of how the system works, before they complain about lag, etc.

joe user

….because i guarantee that if we do get a PC version of rocksmith, pc users will complain about lag–mark-my-words. even if you dont get lag, someone will. then they can read this and cry about not owning a better computer 🙂

Avery

I have an old pentium 4 2.2GHz and I don't get a noticable latency with guitar rig. So it can be done.

DaveB

Input latency in music softwares on PC have a very little to do with machine power but a lot with sound card quality and even more with it's drivers.( of course it's different if the issue comes from processing latency but in my experience it's very rare)

I also own Amplitude and i've done some tests with it.
It is almost unusable with an integrated soundcard used with it's stock drivers cause of the horrible lag (several tenth of second)
It's a lot better, but still not perfect, with Asio4All.

With a decent soundcard (with good Asio drivers, i insist on that) you can achieve lag/latencies of just some ms, ie totally unnoticeable when playing even real fast.

Anyway i doubt that it is this kind of problem that console user's are facing, it's rather a problem with HDMI connection that was never designed to be real time and can/do introduce noticeable lag (depend mostly on console and TV processing circuit)
We, PC users, won't face this kind of problem.

Evan

Ah finally someone who knows what they are talking about :). I was about to write basically this samething. I dont know why people think latency is an issue with not having a powerful enough computer. Its a buffering issue which like you said can be fixed with proper asio drivers. Just thought I would back you up on this that way maybe people will realize what your saying is accurate.

Fred

Sorry for the dumb question but what does DLC stand for? I too was anxiously waiting for the PC version. I don't have XBOX or PS3 and definitely in the 35+ yr old crowd.

WildWing

Hi Fred,

DLC stands for Downloadable Content, meaning additional content the developer of the game has added after the game launched retail. Hope that clears it up for you.

Fred

Thanks for the clarification.

DifferentDan

Shame. I was looking forwards to getting that. It's an odd decision, since RockSmith does seem aimed at an older audience, who is much more likely to have a PC than a playing console.
Oh, well, at least we miss out on the disappointment when we realise we can't play it anyway as it's connect to that horrible UCantPlay DRM system, which just happens to be down on any given day. (Come on, it contains extra hardware, how are we supposed to pirate it?)
And don't call me a kid.

SimRacer

I had the PC version on pre-order at Amazon when I got the "there's a delay" email sometime over the weekend. I canceled my order. I'll be very surprised if the PC version ever sees the light of day now. If they STOPPED working on an entire platform just to work up DLC (to charge for) and bug fixes for the console kids, then they were never serious about offering it on the computer to begin with.

You wait. May 2012 will become June 2012. Which will then become "Fall 2012" which with then become Christmas 2012 – before they pull the plug after stringing everyone along for over a year. No thanks. Luckily Amazon hadn't charged my credit card yet.

Jordon

well thats it ubisoft can kiss my ubi… softly

Paul

At the very least, I hope the PC version ends up being cheaper. It also wouldn't hurt to maybe add a few DLC tracks, but my first wish is for a cheaper price.

I'd also like to see the game on Steam, which I doubt was going to happen because there was no word of pre-orders. I know it requires the cable, but you can buy that separately.

Steve

My two cents says that UBI might be missing an entire market segment by delaying the PC version of Rocksmith. Older potential customers in the 35+ age group are probably far more likely to already own a PC platform and more unlikely to own a gaming platform …

Good luck trying to compete with the kids for plaing time on their PS3 or XBox! Happy holidays to all, and have Cool Yule…

Dan

I bought my son his own PS3 so I wouldn't have to compete with him for my Rocksmith time!

Joe

I'm in the 35+. My wife and I own 2 Macs, 2 PCs and one Wii. We shall be waiting in the wings. If I really saw myself playing other games, I'd invest in a PS3 or XBOX… I won't win the argument ("if we by a gaming system I will play more guitar and better guitar, too!).

Waiting patiently,

Neil. K

I agree. I am one of the,so called older market and would prefer to have the PC version to be able to use this game away from home. Can't wait until it's good to go.

Jamanji

I'm 17 but I have no interest in video games and I can't afford to get a console, even if I could that's a lot for just one game. They should have come out with the PC version first, that makes more sense to me.

Tina

What the hell!!!!!!!???? I Pre=Ordered this game for Christmas last month figuring my husbands Christmas gift would be out of the way- i even went ahead and got him a guitar along with amazing speakers for his new laptop and now your telling me I have to find a whole NEW gift…..just for this I am not buying this game at all ……….. you people sux!

Leonardo Storti

Do you guys have a gaming system? excluding the Wii because it's not on the Wii…..If you have a PS3 or XBOX 360 you should be good, apart from that if you can only get it for the PC, well that sux big time. All Ubisoft is doing is to see how sales go to see if it's worth it for them to release the PC version, they are just being cautious since they know they have to compete against the 2 giants which is Rockband and Guitar Hero, so far it's going ok, if you really want give him the Rocksmith game as a gift then do so but on a gaming system, I'm sure you guys must have either a PS3 or a 360, any of those systems will be good

DaveSchillinger

you obviously are an idiot!!!!!

Leonardo Storti

need to work on your grammar there, I barely understood what you said. Why you mad though?

Huh? Why you mad though?

Bob Schubert

His grammar is sound. You are most definitely the idiot here.

Trey

Everyone is really missing the point! I understand the frustration when you had your hopes up for the pc version, but what's really going on is the ps3 version is totally broken. They released a game that was obviously not tested very well. You cannot play any more than a 4-song set. If you play 5 songs in an event, the ps3 crashes. There are also numerous freezes that occur in all parts of the game. The ps3 community has been filling their inbox with tons of complaints. The developers have recognized that they must focus their efforts on fixing the ps3 version before they have an angry mob on their hands. I know it sucks for pc users but how would feel if you already purchased and received the game only to find out it is un-playable?

Bkabq

Competitors??? Rockband and Guitar Hero?
Give me a break!
RB and GH have nothing to do with actually learning guitar, unless your guitar has 4 colored buttons and a toggle rocker for strumming. All they teach is hand/eye coordination and how to be a good air guitarist.

Hairball1993

Name one gaming platform that is under 5 years old, or in other words obsolete. Platform gaming is the lead weight, the anchor on all quality games.

But as long as the platform junkies keep playing and buying raving rabbids, Ubisoft will give into them as they are a continual, if not stupid, flow of income.

The real and dedicated gamers get the shaft.

Anders Mikkelsen

Not everybody's a console kiddy. Grow up.

Kamil

You're right. And guys, just think about it: Rocksmith is a great idea but poorly made. Ubisoft should be ashamed – just look at IL-2 Sturmovik. They have sold us very good PC games and we still play them. Now Rocksmith looks to me like some kind of dud.

someone who plays gu

why not pay for some actual guitar lessons with a real life teacher…

william

the teacher can't score you like this game

Minyassa

Been there done that found a crappy teacher and wasted a year and $500 on basically learning to read tabs. No drills, no technique, just showing off what a good player HE was. If this game can teach me by repetition and very clear basic instruction to follow drill after drill after drill after drill in a motivated goal-based manner, it will be worth far more than the human interface I tried first, and worth waiting for. That's why. I know not everyone has that experience and there are some good teachers out there, but some of us aren't lucky enough to live near one!

Shut up

Just shut up

Dan

This makes me sad and mad and less inclined to like the devs. I understand that they really need to support the current owners by addressing complaints and fixing problems. But working on NEW DLC for current owners before releasing the game for more platforms is total crap IMO.

Besides, with the way things went for DLC on other music games, they will probably get a bunch of DLC done for current platforms and then when the PC version comes out none of that DLC will be ready for the new owners. So they end up behind schedule again while they re-create the DLC wheel.

I say get the big problems fixed and get the PC version out. Then finish some DLC that can be released for ALL owners at the same time.

cpegeo

Don't believe the lies… The only reason for the PC delay is concern for piracy (real or imagined).

Developers reading this… you know your nodding your head right now – I see you 😉

Rob

These games are developed on computers.
A p.c. should be the first thing the game runs on.
Plus if you were never ready to put it out on p.c. don't say you are and then change the date again and again.
They really are just delaying because of piracy.
I do love the game and play it almost everyday on 360…but still cmon man.

Blackbolt

Piracy? Seriously?! If any game is more protected from piracy its this thing. You have to get the usb to guitar plug… there is a piece of hardware REQUIRED to play… it's not just a anti-piracy dongle of old either. Hell I don't know if you can even buy it separate but still… they must have run into development problems… even though you program on a computer to create a game doesn't mean it's the same code as what is used for the xbox, ps3 or anything else. It HAS to be ported to whatever platform… so unless you are a developer don't act like you know what you are talking about when it comes to development… I am and I do. Delays happen and it REALLY REALLY sucks. I was looking forward to getting this for my birthday… oh well… maybe I will just buy a ps3 and get it over with.

Andrew

So true. Yes, sadly, that is the big reason many games are delayed; not because of bug testing or adding content, or whatever, it's fussing about the copy protection.

smartyman7

Yeah,it may be like L4D where PC got all the DLC for free and Xbox didn't,except PC gets the DLC already on the disc,so you get it free and you don't have to download it
