Speculation: Collective Soul let their light shine down on Rocksmith 2014

cs1

Greetings Rocksmith fans,

Dan’s clue for the week has been solved, so let’s take a look at what he had in store for us.

Confused? It’s one of those magic eye pictures. Apparently if you look past the picture you’re supposed to see a word or something. I’ve never been able to see them, personally. But I digress. You may have noticed that the photo is a .gif, meaning there’s something encrypted in it if you’ve got the password. How might you find the password, well people quickly found out that you can see the word “shiny” in Magic Eye format. Using that, they discovered this image.

Using the Mesa alphabet, user stevexc came to this conclusion.

Dan eventually decided to throw us a bone with this image.

He would eventually confirm what we were supposed to be looking for.

Following that, it didn’t take long for someone to stumble on the right answer.

Yes, a 5-pack of Collective Soul is coming to Rocksmith this week. Surely one of their biggest hits would be considered to be shiny… Plus, one of this month’s newsletter clues tells us we can expect something like that.

Here are the Top 10 songs by @CollectiveSoul on @Spotify US! Which song do you feel is most likely to show up in next week’s DLC pack?

Does this pack make you feel heavy with excitement, or do you just not gel with this group? Let us know in the comments!

    1. Pj must stand for “pathetic joke”. I guess the 10 is your IQ?

I bet you are the same loser that was posting fake challenge scores on the Rocksmith forum. Don’t wait for a ban, just don’t come back.

  1. 300 confirmed kills my ass… So your the top of your class navy seal… Lol… That makes you the most deadly man in the military… More than Kyle??… Your a fucking liar… And yyz I’m only 30 … Probably ur age and I guarantee u would be a giant fucking cunt in person

    1. You were already such a sad excuse for a man, if you would of said you were 12 that would’ve made it not so bad, even double that, but 30? holy crap time to put on your big boy pants and stop your whining like a spoiled adolescent. If you are an adult act like it.

  2. Funny, I was just telling my gf a couple of weeks ago (Shine was playing on the radio) that I wished this band would come to Rocksmith and BAM! There it is! Woot!

    1. That was a cool video although I can’t help thinking that it needed….. Electric bass (gtr #7). xD

  3. I served in the Military PJ…you pop off about stuff half cocked an awful lot…military folks don’t normally threaten to kill people over disagreements, being good guys and all. I don’t quite understand your struggle. I have a feeling you are upset about something but game dlc isn’t what is bothering you.

  4. Thank god most of you ass kissers never served in the military. Oh Ubisoft ??? please put out more garbage so we can spend our money on groups that are irrelevant!

    1. Yeah, and how are you better. You’re a grown man shitting on the DLC for a music game. And yeah. You TOTALLY served the military and you would TOTALLY kill us. Oh no, I’m afraid! Please don’t do it Pj-10!

I just hope you get that you’re sounding like a kid saying “I will call my mommy and daddy and they will kick your butt!”.

    2. So you’re literally saying you’d kill people over their musical taste. You’re either a really unfunny joke or you legitimately need to check yourself into a mental ward (or you’re like 8 years old, which would just overlap with the former).

    3. obviously PJ has a teeny tiny member and needs to carry a big gun to compenasate & feel like a tough guy…G.F.Y.S. .P.J.

    4. What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

        1. There’s definitely some funny fuckers in these comment pages… “secret network of spies”… lol

      1. Son, if what you say is true and you are in the Marine Corps. then shame on you for threatening the life of a civilian. Pj-10 has nothing better to do with his time but it sounds like you, sir, do.

      2. What is it about some military people that feel the need to brag about killing people? Congrats bro, you’re probably going to hell

    5. PJ-10,

This is your final warning, threats won’t be tolerated on here (whether you were baited into it or not) and you will be banned from commenting if you continue in this fashion. Please try to filter yourself a bit more when it comes to back and forth on here.

  5. Same as a lot of people on here haven’t heard of them until now, reminds me Chord wise of some of the Crash Test Dummies stuff, i’m getting old so cant be trusted at the best of times? ?.
Now there’s a band who I’d love to see on here, them and Terrorvision.

  6. This is so exciting! One of my favorite bands from the 90s; they are pretty underrated, imo.

There are so many possible songs, but I think it will be
    Shine
    The World I Know
    December
    Heavy
    Better Now or Gel

    1. Yep… I’m looking forward to this pack also…
I saw them live in park setting years back and have liked them ever since…

  7. Never heard of Collective Soul, so I watched a couple of YouTube vids. How can a song called Shine sound so dull? Another week, another pass.

  8. I love Collective Soul. This band has a great sound and iconic songs. They have a fantastic library…and I look forward to the track pack…funky. I definitely can’t blame anyone who doesn’t like it…but what is with all the flaming? Is it so hard to be civilized anymore…especially over musical taste? It is odd if you put a neuron to it.

  9. What u idiots don’t realize is that u bought a bunch of crap dlc for 2yrs now and Ubisoft has now done 1 thing to make the game better ??… Except for out of the 52 weeks of the year put out 4 or 5 okay packs that y’all jerkoff to … Instead Ubisoft takes your money and makes the district… Jokes on you!

    1. I’m sure you will convince us. Now grandpa please, go back to your room and sleep a bit. You’ve had a busy day.

    2. “Oh wow I totally didn’t realize how much of an idiot I was until you pointed it out to me. All this time I was requesting, buying, and playing songs without realizing I was being an idiot who was so dumb I thought I was enjoying music when in fact I actually hate it.” Said no one ever.

Seriously how else do you expect people to respond to that?

    3. Okay, to be 100% honest as someone who rarely finds an urge to comment on articles:

Pj-10, incessantly childish and nonconstructive behavior such as yours is quite frankly not just a disgrace to these comment threads multiple times every week, but also a disgrace to the Rocksmith franchise and the mere notion of anybody who picks up a guitar or bass in the hopes of learning it.

Were I an aspiring newcomer to this series and not already aware that people such as yourself are thus far the extreme outliers in the fanbase, attitudes such as yours might have actually gone so far as to completely deter me from learning a new skill; given how beneficial Rocksmith has been to me in learning both guitar and bass since it lets me learn at entirely my own pace (speaking as someone who had to frequently be bounced between music teachers as a kid because I learned their material and even their errors too quickly for them to keep up with me), I feel legitimately sorry for any aspiring musicians who come to this site to learn more about Rocksmith as a teaching tool, only to see people like you spewing bile week after week.

    4. There hasn’t been any crap dlc in rocksmith. You’re obviously thinking of rock band 4. The only crappy things in rocksmith are your posts here on the riff repeater.

    5. Just go to google and type in what song/band you want followed by guitar tab. Now you don’t have to wine so much.

  10. Ok pj 10 rocksmith has decided to only release dlc that u like just go ahead and buy ten thousand copies of every song to keep the dlc afloat

  11. Totally forgot about this band.Probably because they only had 3 songs and they all sucked..this is turning into an average learning tool with less than average songs!

  12. Seen in concert several times, never ever disappoints. ‘Contagious’ off the new album has a solid riff, if they go the new album route for songs. Definite buy regardless.

    1. Oh! I totally forgot their new album, “See What You Started By Continuing” came out recently! In that case, I think they’ll probably have one new track off the album. “Contagious” is probably going to be the track, though I wouldn’t mind “AYTA” or “This” (or even “Hurricane”) having a slot on the 5-pack.

  13. I apologize for not mentioning this in my initial post, but I really want to encourage everyone here to give CS another solid listen if any of you think you have them figured out. I feel like many people just see them as the band that did “Shine” or “December” and automatically label them as a grunge band that was behind the times. Believe me, if you gave a listen to any of their first 5 albums, you’d find their style of music is very unique and a far cry from the noisy grunge sound that dominated the decade.

In fact, one of the most unique parts of CS is the fact they utilize orchestras for quite a few of their songs (Needs, Run, The World I Know, etc.) While they have their grungy-sounding songs, most of them have a calming undertone to their sound. Also, I find their lyrics to be very smart and avoids the “Ugh! We’re angsty! I hate authority!” vibe found in a lot of grunge/post-grunge music from the 90’s. Imo, Ed Roland is one of the most underrated songwriters from that time period. His focus on introspective lyric-writing is extremely refreshing to hear even for modern times — and this is coming from a guy who truly discovered them about 2 years ago!

Seriously, give one of the first 5 albums a listen on the streaming site of your choice, whether it be Spotify, Apple Music, or even YouTube. If it had to be just one to listen to, give “Dosage” a try!

  14. Yes!! CS is seriously in my top 5 favorite bands of all time. I’m probably the only one (or least one of the few) people to say that though. Which is a shame because their first 5 albums are extremely solid. Totally getting this pack Tuesday! The songs will probably be:
    Shine
    December
    World I know
    Heavy
    Why pt. 2

Definitely a great mix if that is what we get. BUT If I got to pick though, I’d LOVE these deeper cuts:
    Wasting Time
No More, No Less (awesome bass imo)
    She Said
    Precious Declaration
    Blame

  15. Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve thought about this band. My sisters loved them when they were peaking in the 90s. Interested to see Tuesday brings.

  16. Ridiculous it’s good that we have different taste in music you buy the songs u like n I buy mine if everyone does this we can keep rocksmith dlc alive for years. It’s an amazing game shame hardly anyone knows about it

  17. Some of my favorite Collective Soul songs are deeper cuts like Bleed(which I’ve requested), or Energy. I doubt we’ll see either of those, even though I think they’d be more fun to play on guitar. RS like to go for the hits though. Gets a little boring.

  18. I’m happy for all the fans, but this was a band that I could never stand. Years ago, I worked at a store in a mall and these songs would play on a loop, annoying me to no end. To me, they seemed late to the grunge game and bent on writing insipid grunge pop for inspirational soundtracks and thoughtless consumer radio. I did crack up watching the video for Why pt.2, though. Was that style shift for real, or was it some strange form of self-satire?

    1. Shine was a grunge inspired song late to the game but the band turned to be more of a radio favorite for their catchy blandness but hey compared to the crap these days they stand out

    2. I can definitely see why your opinion was soured from of your old job. As a 21-year old, I never lived that long during the 90’s to know how much radio play they got, but the few people I’ve talked to that listened to music during that decade tell me that radio stations — whether pop or rock stations — were oversaturated with CS. As a result, their opinions were pretty sour about the band as well (though many of them have fond memories of “Shine” lol)

If that is your opinion on the band, it totally makes sense to why you think their music is bland both musically and lyrically. I’m probably not going to change your mind on anything, but I personally find their sound to hold up well in today’s era. Their music bleeds with creativity and their lyrics are far from cliché… though again, I do realize this is entirely my opinion, subjectively speaking. Ironically, they sound fresh to me probably because I discovered them on my own and wasn’t hearing them on loop constantly.

  19. Why Pt. 2 has tapping in the chorus, otherwise kind of dull on guitar but one of my favorites to listen from them

  20. definite buy sign me up for packs 2 and 3 as well been checking them on tube can’t find a song I don’t like ”also loving women who rock two great packs in a row

  21. Very happy about this. I too am hoping for Gel along with Shine and the other top hits. Fingers crossed…

  22. Great to see some Collective Soul on Rocksmith.

Am I the only one that thinks that their song “Better now” deserves a spot in Rocksmith and that it’s generally underated ?

    1. I generally think almost every CS song that wasn’t a hit single was underrated, lol. “Better Now” is certainly one of them, even despite the fact I didn’t really care for their “Youth” album!

  23. You know, back in the day, I never would have thought in a million years that I would ever play Collective Soul but I did learn a couple of their songs on acoustic last year (Shine and The World I Know) after they popped in my head and I’ll be damned but wow, they were a lot a fun to play! I’m curious to see what shows up in the 5-pack and will probably end up picking up the whole thing. Thanks RS!

  24. This is, more than likely, a full pack purchase. I’m hoping for Shine, Where the River Flows, Heavy, Gel, and December.
