OPINION: Notable Holes in our Rocksmith Playlists

header

Let me just start this by saying how incredibly thankful I am that Rocksmith exists and is constantly putting out new DLC for us. Any of you born before the Internet (shhh I’m old), know how hard it was to advance on guitar with Tablature books and no teacher encouraging you with “amazing performance”.

All compliments aside I wanted to ask the community what noticeable holes are in our official Rocksmith DLC playlists. The following is just my opinion and please tell me how wrong I am and what I missed in the comments (but more importantly, request songs!)

Obviously I’m leaving out the obvious Led Zepplin, Pink Flloyd, The Beatles, Metallica etc., so don’t even bother commenting about that.

60s and Earlier:

The Beach Boys

Sure we have surf rock, but it’s a travesty we don’t have the pioneers of surf rock to play through.

Dream 5-Pack:

Wouldn’t It Be Nice

Surfin’ USA

I Get Around

California Girls

Kokomo

Chuck Berry

Since we’re playing Rocksmith and the word “rock” is in it, shouldn’t we learn from its great-great grandfather?

Dream 5-Pack:

Johnny B. Goode

You Never Can Tell

School Day

Roll Over Beethoven

Route 66

Grateful Dead

OK, OK, I know American Beauty technically came out in the 70s, but they formed and began hippie jamming in the mid 60s, so it counts. Regardless, we could use some jam bands in our sets, and who better than Jer Bear to teach us?

Dream 5-Pack:

Friend of the Devil

Touch of Grey

Truckin’

Box Of Rain

Fire On The Mountain

Simon and Garfunkel

I would also love, love, love just a Paul Simon pack. Did you see his performance on the 40th Anniversary of SNL?

Dream 5-Pack:

Mrs. Robinson

Bridge Over Troubled Water

The Boxer

The Sound of Silence

Scarborough Fair

The 70s

Fleetwood Mac

I’d especially love a few of their bluesy early, early tracks before Stevie Nicks joined up, but I mean c’mon, how do we not have Landslide yet?

Dream 5-Pack:

Landslide

Go Your Own Way

The Chain

Rhiannon

Never Going Back Again

Black Sabbath

I mean. C’mon.

Dream 5-Pack:

Paranoid

Iron Man

War Pigs

Black Sabbath

Children of the Grave

Steve Miller Band

With a crazy amount of hit’s and a whole lot of fun guitar technique, it makes me sad we’re missing out on some of these grooves.

Dream 5-Pack:

The Joker

Take the Money and Run

Rock’n Me

Fly Like An Eagle

Jet Airliner

The Bee Gees

I am absolutely terrible at funk guitar or whatever you wanna call this style of playing, but I’d love to have a challenge of playing some disco and singing crazy falsetto to prove it’s not dead (Actually, just checked on Wiki; still dead).

Dream 5-Pack:

Stayin’ Alive

You Should Be Dancing

More Than A Woman

Night Fever

Jive Talkin’

The 80s

Edit: When I originally wrote this, I had The Cars here too. Hooray!

Huey Lewis and the News

Probably one of my favorite bands ever. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up with him, or if it’s because Back to the Future is easily the best movie of the 80s (fight me about it) but Huey is by far my #1 “wish it was on Rocksmith” band.

Dream 5-Pack:

If This Is It

The Heart of Rock and Roll

Hip to Be Square

I Want a New Drug

Heart and Soul

(Bonus song) The Power of Love

Talking Heads

While I was not a fan of them while they were actually making music, I have grown to love them and have their entire discography on vinyl. Anyone who hasn’t seen “Stop Making Sense” watch it and tell me it’s not the best concert film of all time.

Dream 5-Pack:

Psycho Killer

This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)

Burning Down The House

And She Was

Life During Wartime

Van Halen

This band might be on the “too expensive/hard/impossible” to license list, but screw that, they are 80s rock. Even the Sammy stuff I love and being able to tap through “Eruption” would be simply the best.

Dream 5-Pack:

Panama

You Really Got Me

Runnin’ With the Devil

Eruption

Runaround

Journey

We have Foreigner, we have Boston, we even have Styx. It’s time to pay tribute to the incredible vocals and equally fun guitar work of Journey.

Dream 5-Pack:

Don’t Stop Believing

Any Way You Want It

Wheel in the Sky

Lights

Ask the Lonely

The 90s

My decade for music is sadly primarily filled with one-hit wonders and 90s voice guy alt-rock (also the best damn hip-hop ever) but there’s still some good guitar work at play. Of all the decades represented, I feel the 90s are the most represented, but still these would all be welcome additions.

Goo Goo Dolls

Roll your eyes all you want, but listen to the guitar in these songs and tell me it’s not worthy of a DLC.

Dream 5-Pack:

Iris

Slide

Black Balloon

Name

Fallin’ Down

Live

Sure they pretty much have only one good album, but it’s nearly a perfect album with plenty of guitar to have fun with.

Dream 5-Pack:

Lightning Crashes

I Alone

All Over You

Selling the Drama

The Dolphin’s Cry

Third Eye Blind

There might not be a more 90s band.

Dream 5-Pack:

Jumper

Semi-Charmed Life

How’s It Gonna Be

Never Let You Go

Graduate

Nine Inch Nails

Yes I know Trent Reznor is super busy scoring David Fincher movies, but in the 90s you couldn’t be stuck at a stop light without hearing those familiar warbles.

Dream 5-Pack:

Closer

The Hand That Feeds

Hurt

Head Like A Hole

Only

The 2000s and Beyond

Arcade Fire

A crazy popular band who have an epic, full sound that would be a blast top play through.

Dream 5-Pack:

Wake Up

Ready To Start

The Suburbs

Reflektor

Rebellion (Lies)

Jimmy Eat World

Kinda like Weezer-lite, but still they have so many songs that would be welcomed additions to anyone’s playlist.

Dream 5-Pack:

The Middle

Pain

Bleed American

Blister

My Best Theory

Brand New

K, my last emo pick I promise. Seriosuly though, really awesome guitar and bass in these songs if you can get past all the sadness.

Dream 5-Pack:

Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades

The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows

Jude Law and a Semester Abroad

Seventy Times 7

Sowing Season (Yeah)

Slipknot

This is for all you metalheads out there. I don’t even like this band, but I can respect technique.

Dream 5-Pack:

The Devil In I

Wait And Bleed

Before I Forget

Duality

Psychosocial

So that’s it. Let me know how wrong I am in the comments and what your picks are. And as always request songs people!

  1. would love to see the top gun anthem in the next rocksmith goes to the movie or any 80s pack. Stevens is Billy Idols excellent guitarist, and frankly we also need more Idol songs. Idols tunes always have great guitar parts, and even though they were right in the heart of the 80s they used the keyboard more as texture that didnt take away from the guitar parts.

anyways, heres the top gun anthem. complete with finger tapping:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIq5x8-QL-o

  2. Would love to see some heavier bands get put on rocksmith, like kataklysm or shadows fall. The light that blinds would be interesting to see tabbed out. Also where’s the yngwie malmstein? Caprici Di Diablo would be insane to see pop up on the rocksmith shop.

    1. OK, great artists. I requested mowtown fever and super colossal. I’d like to see more Joe bonamassa in the game and some robin trower as well. What would be great would be a rif repeater song request super pack/voting bloc. I’m starting to feel like my lone requests are going out like messages in a bottle and getting the same results.

  3. I believe the best of the solo artists are woefully underrepresented in RockSmith. This may be simply a matter of people not knowing the artists and their hits that well, so I will be doing a few post with links in hopes to lobby some of you to join me in requesting. request here –> bit.ly/rsrequest

    ok artist 1 (Joe Satriani)

    Come on baby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqMljkAIVxg

    Super Colossal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2NAzmwNTH0&list=PL7509795CE30DED0A

    and a personal favorite

Always With Me, Always With You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI57QHL6ge0

  4. Wow, there are so many but here’s a few;
Eric Clapton (why RS but not RS14?)
    Bob Seger
    James Taylor
    Elvis Presley
    Bob Marley
    The Misfits
    The Minutemen (need more punk)

  5. There also needs to be a second Green Day pack.

    “When I Come Around”
    “Brain Stew/Jaded”
“Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life”
    “Holiday”
    “Waiting”
“Welcome To Paradise” (the Kerplunk version)
Any Green Day song would be awesome.

    Carrie Underwood “Last Name”
    Jonathan Edwards “Sunshine”

  6. “Don’t Wanna Fight”
    “Future People”
    “Always Alright”
    “Dunes”
    “I Ain’t The Same”
    “Rise To The Sun”
    “Hold On”
    “Gimme All Your Love”

I’m seriously in “Over My Head” but there NEEDS to be an Alabama Shakes pack, especially for PlayStation 3.

Excuse all the excessive requests but I love this band.

      1. lol, no, my playing attire is far more casual. Just the best example I found on youtube. Nice guitar though. Wish we could have a no vocals option like that in RS

  7. TOOL! It went to guitar hero, gets me thinking it could happenned… (Vicarous, Schism, Parabola, Thick and Leeches..) and :
-Motley Crue, Kickstart my heart will be enough for me!
-Guns ‘n’ roses (Welcome to the jungle? November rain?).
-Ho, Rush as i’ve never enough,
-Metallica (don’t tempt me with anything!).
… I just had a last thought for Gwar (surely i’ll die dreaming of it!)

  8. What I could really use are some relaxing post-rock songs from bands like: mogwai, this is going to kill you, if these trees could talk, etc. They don’t have lyrics so there’s no voice to grate on you after you’ve played it many times.

    1. I really agree with you. I’d love to get some post-rock. Let’s all request it here: bit.ly/rsrequests.

  9. This list would be perfect! Also needs Yes, Scorpions, Staind, and maybe an Alice in Chains 3 pack with Rooster, Nutshell, Down in a hole or I stay away.

  10. Some more punk or indie stuff would be awesome.

    Social Distortion
    Pixies
    Sex Pistols
    Dead Kennedys
    Sonic Youth
    The Replacements

Would all be very welcome additions.

    1. Agree with “more punk”, especially the DKs. Might add Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and The Descendents also had some great songs.

  11. Flirtin’ with disaster ….great song for guitar players. More Deep Purple like ” Maybe I’m a Leo.

  12. You guys forgot to put Stone Temple Pilots, the Cult, Puddle of Mudd, Collective Soul, Hootie and the Blowfish and Rival Sons…

  13. I looked at this list again. For Fleetwood Mac, throw out “The Chain” and “Never Going Back Again” in favor of “Big Love” and “Go Insane”. Sure there isn’t much for bassists in those song, but for lead, they’d be fun to play.

    1. Fleetwood Mac could easily fill up a pack the same size we got with Hendrix. I hope this is the case for a few artists down the line.

  14. A couple of good bands, but, man, this list of suggested bands might actually be worse than the bands Rocksmith actually picks!

  15. Manowar, more Joe Satriani, Tool, more RATM, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Scorpions, King Diamond, Bruce Dickinson (Solo Albums especially Balls to Picasso), Savatage, Pink Floyd, Beastie Boys, Ugly Kid Joe, Rammstein, more Bon Jovi doesn’t hurt, Deep Purple

  16. as per usaul AMERICAN centric playlists and requests….. you guys do know there is music made in other parts of the world right? where is the british rock/punk(you know the stuff they invented and USA copied) Australian music?? something from europe or asia

    sheesssssssssssssssh

  17. Lets be active, with an experiment

Lets work the system. I propose we stand united and get everyone here to request these three songs:
    Pearl Jam – Army Reserve
    Pearl Jam – In Hiding
    Pearl Jam – Corduroy

Lets see if our combined requests can move the DLC

    Request Link below:

This CAN only work if we all stand together, united.

  18. I won’t even try to leave some response of what “I” think is missing but I want to commend the author of this for the Brand New love. No crazy guitar solos for them but, solid songwriting. I know Deja Entendu beginning to end on every instrument… it’s def one of my top 5 fav albums ever.

  19. Too many to list so I’ll think outside the box…

Prince….The man ia a genre unto himself and appeals to fans of rock funk jazz etc….Would be an amazing addition to the library…

  20. My God, I got a brief headache when all the bands I thought of tried cram into my brain all at the same time. I slow clapped for the Talking Heads, Black Sabbath and Journey mentions. My nominations include those bands as well as The Replacements, a huge gaping that’s-not-a-moon-that’s-a-space-station sized hole in Rocksmith,Concrete Blonde, Jim’s guitar tone alone is worth price of any songs that may come, Oingo Boingo, especially (Wild Sex) Working Class, and Candlebox, who I feel have one of the most overlooked guitar players of all time. I really had to whittle it down to these four so as not to write a novella in the comments section.

  21. How about a Jazzsmith DLC similar to the Bachsmith DLC?

Some suggestions and guitar renditions on YouTube

(If you’re like me, you’ll instantly recognize all of these by ear, you just won’t be able to name them since there are no words.)

    * Feels So Good
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNRdcsJleHI

    * Take the A-Train
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV3ELc6NCEc

    * The Girl From Impanema
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51r27dMRhQY

    * In the Mood

    * Moonlight Serenade
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BEmFQw5-s8

    1. 100% Yes. Maybe we can add some Whiplash in there too. Assuming J.K. Simmons will come yell at me.

  22. I’d probably swap out Black Sabbath for Sympton of the Universe or Into the Void. Personally i belive that we shouldn’t have songs like Iron Man because for one, would it really kill you to learn the riffs to them. the only way they should be in this game is for the solos.

  23. Two words: ERIC CLAPTON.
This old school rocks us up to these days with all his rocks, blues and acoustics.
I know one Clapton song was in the original RS, but it didn’t got ported to RS2014 so it doesn’t count, but still no DLC pack for this guitar legend. Cocaine, Layla, Tears in Heaven, Old Love, Bad Love, and soooooooo many other songs.

  24. Nice list. Just know we’ve discussed all these artists (and more) here too, and we’ve approached a lot of them already. Licensing takes anywhere from “a long time” to “no thank you, please stop calling,” so we remain hopeful that some of your dreams up there will eventually appear in the game, too.

    1. Awesome! And just so you know, we all appreciate the constant release of amazing DLC. It’s always nice to have these “wish-list” discussions and we know you’re all trying to get everything we want. I meant no disrespect on your hard work over there. You’re killing it.

On a personal note, I love it when you do lesser known bands (Biffy Claro, etc.) and themed singles. Also Bachsmith was pure genius. Keep it up!

    2. Hi Dan. I understand why you might not want to publish this (“keep hope alive”) but at the same time I’d like to get some closure: so will you ever tell us when a band says “please stop calling”? I’m thinking Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Black Sabbath or Ozzy, Metallica

  25. Ok so since I’m using the name, may as well make mention of what’s required from Carlos and crew.

    1) In A Silent Way – 1st choice above anything else
    2) Guajira – love the solos
    3) Taboo – someone teach me, how does he hold that note so long starting at 1:58
    4) Se A Cabo
    5) El Farol
    6) Hoy Es Adios
    7) Mother’s Daughter

  26. Oh man, I forgot these guys. Here are the songs, who knows the artist?
    Nonfiction
    Thorn in My Pride
    Bad Luck Blue Eyes
    Twice As Hard
    Hard to Handle
and I’m sure the last one is obvious……….

  27. I was with you until the 90s with the exception of Slipknot. I would switch out Fire on the Mountain with Casey Jones for the Grateful Dead.

I feel the Commodores are missing out of here as well George Clinton & P-Funk:

    Commodores:

    Easy
    Brick House
    Three times a lady
    Machine Gun
    Nightshift

    P-Funk:

    ALL!!!

    1. Please bring on MAGGOT BRAIN –

If you haven’t heard this song, find a quiet place, turn off all the lights, crank this song and just sit and listen as Eddie Hazel gets off in your earhole. I swear at 7.25 into the song Eddie’s guitar is crying. I mean like take a breath and repeatedly cry. This is a highly under appreciated solo. I’ve been writing to Guitar World for years to tab this thing out.

Listen to the title track from the album of the same name or the last track on Funkadelic’s One Nation Under A Groove.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOKn33-q4Ao

Santana, Pearl Jam, Govt Mule and others have covered it. On Youtube there is also an awe inspiring version by a boy and his uncle played at a family barbecue.

For years I’ve heard repeated talk about Eruption, the Stairway solo, Europa, Machine Gun and many others. While I like all of those songs, this track should not be far from them.

  28. Two ideas for RS:
    i) Tribute Packages–These would be sets of “covers” by performers to highlight works of song writers poets, and music artists who make beautiful things but are not well known, do not write for guitar, are deceased, etc. For examples, Leonard Cohen and Stevie Wonder have already been mentioned here, and a few years ago there were a number of heavy metal groups who released covers of ABBA songs. Here are a few more ideas:
Neil Diamond, JJ Cale, Gordon Lightfoot, Elton John & Bernie Taupin, Warren Zevon, Robert Johnson, Billy Joel, Tori Amos, Holly Cole, Van Morrison, Carole King, Hank Williams, Howlin’ Wolf.
ii) Live Works–There are some performers who sound infinitely better in concert than in any studio recording they make (Talking Heads are a perfect example of this), so instead of ‘normal tracks’ these perfomances could be used to create RS content.

And to continue conversation started by the article, here are more ideas & suggestions. (I was able to find all of them as music tracks or videos at YouTube so look them up if you wish!)

    Easily Distrac

    1. Interesting idea on covers/live versions. We’ve already had 2 versions of “Holy Diver”. I’d certainly rather have the ‘best’ version of any track, whatever form that might take… but I guess it’s subjective in some cases.

BTW I was just listening to “The Cult — She Sells Sanctuary” earlier today & considering filing an RS request. In fact, there are a lot of good suggestions there, so I’ll be busy… 😉

Please check my list below if you haven’t seen it. At first glance, I think there’s only Bryan Adams in common with yours. Nice job listing plenty I hadn’t thought of.

      1. I’m glad you are considering some of the stuff in my list–I have found lots of good stuff because of RS and I hope I can pass different interests onto others. (BTW, check out the other Cult songs I listed as well … no one ever likes ‘just one’ Cult song. 😀 )

Actually, it was reading your list and MarleySantana’s list that convinced me to finally post some thoughts at The Riff Repeater after hanging around here for the last.15 months. (I’m very shy. 😮 )

        1. Good stuff. Sounds like exactly my story. Found loads of new things through RS (“Don’t Stop” springs to mind). Followed this site (silently) for info on DLC etc, and finally saw this thread as an opportunity to contribute something in the form of that list I’d been building up. Keep requesting! I guess I need to set up a playlist & do some listening over the weekend 🙂

      2. Some nice ideas for songs. I’ve already requested many of these myself. No Cult list should be complete without Wildflower, Lil Devil and Love Removal Machine (my biased opinion, lol). Although you could easily make a ten pack of Cult tunes and I would buy them immediately. So many great guitar riffs in their songs. I would also give Bad Company and CCR their own packs, too many great songs in their catalogues. Great job Rocksmith, the hopes of more great DLC keeps me practicing.

    2. Yes. Nice list, and glad to see you got Hook on your list among many others. May I add JLH’s Chill Out? Although it features Carlos Santana’s guitar work, it is a great song featuring these two.

Oh and for Howlin’ Wolf, according to an interview with Guitar World here is one of Jimmy Page’s favorites – Goin’ Down Slow. Awsome song.

  29. I would love to see Van Halen someday. However, given Eddie’s pervasive use of the whammy bar, which needs to be a floating system to actually play a large amount of the material correctly, I just don’t know if it would be possible. A lot of people wouldn’t have a compatible guitar, and the system may need to be tweaked for it to work.

That being said, having a tool to learn some wicked two hand tapping and some tapped/artificial harmonics would be sweet!

They are easily one of my favorite bands, so here would be my dream 12 pack, just for fun:
    Little Guitars (with Intro)
    Panama
    Hot for Teacher
    I’m the One
    Beautiful Girls
    Hear About it Later
    Feel Your Love Tonight
    5150
    Finish What Ya Started
    Unchained
    Hang ’em High
    Ain’t Talking Bout Love

Very close mentions would be Cabo Wabo and Dance the Night Away.

  30. I’m going to leave a succinct response for the moment because it’s almost 2 am, but I want to say that saying anything missing is a “hole” in Rocksmith is being more than a little disingenuous to the staff. They’re not trying to be your *only* resource, just a better one. Most of us could probably list two dozen bands and hundreds of songs that would work well for Rocksmith style teaching. I personally think that almost anything with multiple guitar harmonies in melodies or solos would be great for people to practice with a solid and unwavering alternating voice to get ready for a live atmosphere. I have gotten into the habit of not submitting bands/songs anymore because a lot of things I listen to may not have enough of a draw to be commercially viable or worth pursuing.

It’s kind of frustrating/discouraging sometimes because there are some amazing pieces that most people will never discover because of that hurdle, and a lot of them would be great learner pieces.

    1. +1. I appreciate what they do, but you just know there is some great stuff that won’t likely see light of day not through rights issues but simply because of limited “popularity” for want of a better word. But when there are only so many notetrackers, hours in the day and only so much ROI.. its fairly clear where things will go.

  31. 60’s Cream
    70’s Supertramp
    80’s Skid Row
    90’s Monster Magnet
    00’s Turbonegro

That would be DLC heaven for me

  32. Just a thought, I’d like to see Deafheaven in Rocksmith. I just started listening to them a bit, and would love to learn Dream House.

  33. Oh, in my honorable mentions, I forgot to include a couple. Prince, John Cougar, and please forgive me for missing this one….. That Lil Ol’ Band from Texas.

Y’all know what time it is.

    1. The Boys Are Back In Town is a natural for Rocksmith 🙂

      Jailbreak
      Dancing in the Moonlight
      Wild One
      Do Anything You Want To

      Instabuy!

    2. The Boys Are Back In Town is a natural for Rocksmith 🙂

      Jailbreak
      Dancing in the Moonlight
      Wild One
      Do Anything You Want To

  34. I would like for more bass love and these suggestions also have gawd like guitarists: YES (Squire/Howe)
    Dixie Dregs
    Stuart Hamm
    Steve Vai
    Satrani

    1. Yes 1,000,000 times to Bad Company. “Feel Like Makin’ Love” would be just too much fun and make too many people pregnant which is why it probably hasn’t been included yet.

  35. Name by the Goo Goo Dolls is unfortunately completely unreasonable, as the b string is tuned up to an e, forcing people to have 9s and hope they don’t break, or put a second e string on.

  36. Guns & Roses?

For bassists, a Motown or Funk pack including stuff like Jackson 5 ‘want you back’ etc would be cool. Plus a Royal Blood pack would be awesome for bassists only!

Would love the Slipknot pack, but the bass tunings alone would be a HUGE issue (lots of B variations = spagetti strings!) – unless you plug a 5 string in!

    1. The only reason we can’t have a GnR pack is because of a silly little feud between Rose and Slash. Axl would NEVER be up for licensing his songs after RS1 had Velvet Revolver’s Slither.

      1. Sadly, that’s most likely the case with many of the artists we really want on RS. Look at the crap Van Halen has done over the years. It’s like there are neverending attempts to erase members from the past. It’s like these b****es will never get over the bafoonery that keeps members at odd with one-another.

  37. I largely agree with many of these artists, even though I abhor a few of them. I would like to add that rockabilly is a missed opportunity. I’ve request some Brian Setzer and The Living End(which is slightly more punk, but still some amazing guitar. Some rock/jazz fusion would be great, like John Scofield, Wes Montgomery, Pat Methaney, etc. Progressive rock and metal are woefully underrepresented. Porcupine Tree would be a fantastic addition. Even some of Steven Wilson’s solo stuff would be great. He has Guthrie Govan playing on his latest solo albums. Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Enchant, Spock’s Beard, all amazing bands who could provide a lot of fun and learning experiences. Also, there are a few Japanese instrumental bands that I would absolutely love to play in game. Check out rega, LITE, or The Band Apart. I’ve requested songs from each of those bands, and its really just a fantasy to expect them in game, but they’ve got some great guitar and bass in their music. Check out Teenager by rega, or any of The Band Apart’s recent stuff. Its great music.

    1. Huey Lewis, Steve Miller, Greatful Dead and more just flat out JAM TUNES like Flirtin’ with Disaster. God I want the official version of that for Bass! I just like rolling jam sessions.

  38. Great site, been following for a while. My first post here, since I’ve kind of been looking for a good place to do this…

Loads of great suggestions here. This seems to be the most appropriate place to promote & support each other’s songs that we’ve previously requested via the app (and I believe Ubi forums don’t want threads doing that?)

I’ll be trawling everyone’s suggestions & submitting requests for all the ones I like the sound of. Please do likewise with mine… here’s a selection of songs I’ve requested… a bit of a mixture, but anything pre-90’s is a certain buy for me…

BTW: If anyone has contact/sway with UbiSF/Team Rocksmith, I’d be interested if data is available on stats/top-40 on the total play counts across all songs/DLC released so far. Might give a different insight into what is actually popular / fun to play.

    1. Really solid list yourself dude! Bryan Adams is great and one I almost included. Same with ZZ Top (though I think they’re tough to licence). Keep requesting. We’re bound to get some of these someday 🙂

      1. Thanks. Yeah, we may only have one voice/vote each on any particular song, but I have personally seen 8 songs release that I previously requested (one older example that was a nice surprise when it released being Surfaris Wipe Out), so it can only help to submit each other’s ‘most-wanted’ lists.
Even for those tough to license bands, because if they do ever get the go-ahead, we know from past experience that the most-requested tracks have a good shot at appearing.

    2. Man you have a great list. I really do want to learn that Gimme Shelter by the Stones. Good call.
For ZZ Top – add I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide
      Def Leppard – Rocket
Bryan Adams – Cuts Like a Knife
      Chuck Berry – Guitar Boogie
and to be honest I was a lil’ miffed they didn’t get Tom Petty’s Runnin Down a Dream last year. Sorely missed.

Maybe next week on here they should do a section on Artist Already on Rocksmith with missing Essential Songs. (Missed a lot with No Doubt last year.)

      1. Thanks, will put some more requests in 😉

I like that idea too… there are quite a few artists in the game that could easily manage a 2nd or 3rd pack, some of which I’ve already mentioned above. I believe we’ve only just started to see this happen recently, so Ubi are no doubt aware, but doesn’t hurt to throw out some ideas.

  39. Holy crap, I must be the only person to have ever played Rocksmith to want more metal apparently XP. More modern metal. I respect the older stuff and heck I even got Hallelujah from the Jeff Buckley pack, but damn it seems like there’s more E Standard bar music more than anything. I just wish we had a good pack, that featured just drop-tuned tracks, maybe even screamo, just a good 5-pack and I wouldn’t complain. Granted, we did have packs like BFMV and Killswitch Engage and even A Day To Remember, but that’s basically it. Maybe like Asking Alexandria, For Today, Escape the Fate, something like that. And for the people who say “metal is a mindless genre for the dumb”, they have a lot of techniques you can use for other genres. Example, I learned how to tap from metal, which is mostly how I learned how to play Cold Company by Minus the Bear, which i nothing close to metal anyway.

  40. I still want to see skilet, breaking benjamin, five finger death punch, volbeat, motley crue, atreyu, RED, and some more things that my girlfriend will want to play!! The fray, daughtry, needtobreathe, green river ordinance…

  41. I’d like to see more Blues and Blues-based rock. But there really need’s to be a some Jazz in Rocksmith. I appreciate the Gipsy Jazz vibe of Rondo alla Turca in the Bachsmith pack but what about some Grant Green?

  42. Most importantly above all tha I mention, TUFF GONG

    BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS.

note: I have requested nearly evey artist and song mentioned via Ubisoft’s page.

    How ’bout you?

  43. Okay so in all of that obvious choices were left out. SRV, Zeppelin, ACDC, BB King etc. honorable mention goes to Parliament/Funkadelic (turn off the lights and play Maggot Brain loud) Motley Crüe, Def Leppard, Run DMC- King of rock, Beastie Boys No Sleep Til Brookyn, Metallica, Jimmy Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt and required updates from Green Day, the Stones, anything from Velvet Revolver.

  44. For the 2000s all I can say is John Mayer, Gary Clarke Jr. and Los Lonely Boys
    JM
Who did you think I Was
(Mayer’s version of Bold As Love)
    Daughters
    Vultures
    Gravity

    GCJr
    Things are Changing
    Next door neighbor Blues
    Ain’t messin around

    LLB
    Crazy Dream
    More Than Love(Acoustic version)
    Never Met A Woman

    1. I want all of Gary Clark Jr. Bright Lights is easily my favorite track in all of Rocksmith. I would also add “I Don’t Need No Doctor” by John Mayer.

      1. They really do need more Blues and BluesRock on Rocksmith.

Should even have more from Santana on there.

  45. 90s yes some of the best HipHop was in this decade but before I get to that, am I the only person who likes Stone Temple Pilots? Seems everyone is forgetting them.
    Plush
    Wicked Garden
    Sex Type Thing
    Creep
    Gasoline
    Pretty Penny
    Big Empty

For HipHop why not learn some baselines. Mike Elizondo is killing it on nearly everything Dr Dre has produced post NWA. Baselines from Pete Rock, Eric Sermon and the whole Tribe Called a Quest catalog would be fun too.

And since we’ve talked rock and hip hop, where are RHCP on Rocksmith.
    All Around the World
    Give it away
    Breaking the Girl
    Hard to Concentrate
    Tell Me Baby
    Blood Sugar Sex Magic

  46. Before getting to the 80s I forgot to say good call on the Steve Miller Band. Ok for the 80s, Huey Lewis and the News and Journey BAM!!! Rock on Bruh.

Ok now for the band whom I continue to both love and hate. I’ve written about that last nerve before. Here we go–Van Halen. They are right next to Zeppelin ACDC GNR. Probably never happen but we can dream. If released we would, like Hendrix need a 12pak or more to do them and us Justice.
    Ain’t Talkin Bout Love
    Eruption/You Really Got Me
    I’ve Cream Man
    Everybody Wants Some
    DOA
    Could This Be Magic
    Mean Street
    Unchained
    Panama
    Hot For Teacher
    Best of Both Worlds
    5150
    Cabo Wabo
    Finish What Ya Started
    Poundcake
    Runaround
    Man on a Mission
    Amsterdam
    Deja Vu
    Fire in the Hole
Can’t Get this stuff No More
    You and Your Blues

  47. I think a cool idea for Rocksmith would be to have a poll for what the community thinks are the best 50-100 guitarists and after the list is compiled try and make DLC for each one if possible. I think it could generate some serious buzz and if marketed properly would drive sales to new customers. Just an idea, well, maybe a dream.

  48. No mention of U2 at all?????? Love them or hate them absolutely one of the best bands period. And, the Edge is a revered and innovative guitarist. Since you listed some cheesy bands what about Bad Company? 38. Special. My absolute desire would be to see some Frank Zappa!!!!! I mean really the list is practically endless.

    1. Best ever? I disagree wholeheartedly, but you are of course entitled to your own opinion.

To me they are overplayed and not worth the hype. I respect the Edge, but I don’t personally care if they ever come to Rocksmith. I’d sooner request “One Note Song” by Tenacious D lol

  49. 70s. Good call on the Fleetwood Mac however; you need to toss out a few. Remove Rihannon and The Chain (both great songs btw) and insert BIG LOVE and either Gold Dust Woman or Go Insane.

Sabbath may be in that Beatles, Zeppelin, Van Halen pit. Most likely won’t see it. Could use a 70s Folk Pack featuring two from Jim Croce – Operator and Time in a Bottle and two from James Taylor – You’ve Got a Friend and Carolina. Lastly, for the 70s can we do justice by Aerosmith? What is the hold up? 1) Last Child 2) The Movie (80s I know). 3) Same Old Song and Dance

  50. Continuing with the 60s, we also need a blues pack. 1. Muddy Waters- Gypsy Woman. 2. Howlin Wolf – Goin Down Slow. 3. Cream – Crossroads 4. Fleetwood Mac – One Sunny Day. 5. Big Momma Thornton – Wang Dang Doodle. Done with the 60s

  51. On this blog I posed a question similar to this a couple of weeks ago. Glad to see it get traction.

Ok as someone who has requested a lot of Chuck berry, I’ll start there. Your dream five is good however you need to replace to choices. Toss You Never Can Tell and Route 66 in favor of Almost Grown and Guitar Boogie. Have a listen and you see why.
Also, while the Beach Boys deserve credit the bass players behind the Motown Sound should come up to bat first. And right behind them should be James Brown. Top 5: 1. Super Bad(17yo Bootsy Collins is killin it) 2. Mother Popcorn. 3. I Got That Feelin’. 4. Poppa’s Got a Brand New Bag and 5. Sex Machine.

  52. Also with that Black Sabbath pack, All the songs I know are in that dream pack, so I would buy some songs.

    1. You do not know how much I would jump around for joy. I’ve never listened much to their older albums, but here is what I would like in a hypothetical DT pack:
      (Heavy Metal DT pack)
In the Name of God (C Standard)
Panic Attack (Bb Standard [Silhouette Bass]) OR The Great Debate (Drop D)
      As I Am (C Standard)
      (Prog ,Metal DT pack)
      Never Enough (D Standard)
The Count of Tuscany (E Standard)
On the Backs of Angels (E Standard)

  53. I’d say one thing left out would be some punk bands like bad religion or social distortion! I’d be down for them

  54. I would love to see Jimmy Eat World on rocksmith. They have a ton of good riffs, I’d like to see at least the following:

    23
    For Me This Is Heaven
    Appriciation
    Hear You Me
    The Middle

  55. Good list… for nine inch nails– anything from Broken would be nice.

Also surprised no mention of Queens of the Stone Age? Very guitar-centric band and one in the top 40 with no dedicated pack yet. Josh Homme has a unique playing style. Definitely one I’ve been waiting for, though I suspect that their more popular songs being in C standard might be an issue…

  56. Zappa, Anthrax, John Scofield, John Frusciante… Really anything with a great guitarist is going to be worth playing and learning from, though.

  57. I could go for some Portugal The Man or Bad Suns as far as newer stuff goes. Zeppelin is the holy grail.

      1. One of my favorite things about Rocksmith (and Rock Band to a lesser extent) was how they could introduce me to bands I’ve never heard of. In Rocksmith Grace Potter and Gary Clark primarily. I’d love an “Indie Rock” pack or whatever you want to call it. Portugal The Man is fantastic. Ditto for Alabama Shakes.

      2. Just a thought, I’d love to see Deafheaven in Rocksmith. Just started listening to them a bit, and would love to learn Dream House.

      3. +1 for Big Wreck and Ian Thornley’s solo stuff is good too. Conscience & Consequence off of his Tiny Pitcures (2009) album is wicked!

  58. Excellent list. I agree with most artists mentioned. The big hole I constantly talk about is the lack of Australian music.

Some Aussie songs which I think will work for Rocksmith include:
    Eagle Rock – Daddy Cool
Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet
What’s My Scene – Hoodoo Gurus

And band packs can be from:
    Skyhooks
    Cold Chisel
    INXS
    Australian Crawl
    Noiseworks.

    1. I like the way you think…
You could also throw in some:
      Baby Animals
Rose Tattoo (maybe a bit too much slide guitar)
      Angels.

  59. This pretty much reads like a list of your favourite bands. It might be more interesting to discuss which genres have little or no coverage in RS. Surely those are the real holes?

    .

    1. You’re right! That’s why it’s an opinion piece. The point is to get people to request songs. Don’t like my picks? What are yours?

      1. Very true. But it’s fun. Seriously though, I think it is insane that so little blues has been reflected on RS. If you think of RS as a learning tool, then consider this. It would be a safe bet to say at least 85% of the guitarists (both lead and bass) currently on Rocksmith and who ever will be on any version of Rocksmith got their start with the blues. Why not raise us the same way?

Seriously, you pick up a guitar and learn your favorite song. Then you learn other songs by your favorite artist. If you honestly are truly into that artist you look back at their influences. For example, with one of my many favorites, I began developing an appreciation for John Lee Hooker, Tito Puente, and a greater appreciation for B.B. King. (haven’t looked into Gabor Szabo yet). With that said, why isn’t the blues in greater representation on RS?

Here’s an idea. Contact an artist influenced by the blues. Have them suggest tracks and if you can get the license, put out a pack of influences. For example, let’s say Ubisoft contacts Keith Richards. Then in June or whenever; a pack called Kef’s Influences is released. In it, you might find a lot of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. Here’s an interesting one as it is actually a true trail.

John Mayer–>Stevie Ray Vaughan–>Jimi Hendrix–>Buddy Guy–>Muddy Waters–>Robert Johnson. (Yes I like the blues and this is actually true. Jimi was a big fan of Buddy Guy who’s career wasn’t much older than Jimi’s.)

    2. Oh, forgot to mention. Yours is a great I idea.

      I submit:
      Blues
      Reggae
      Funk
      Hitsville U.S.A (aka Motown)
Rock instrumentals (for example VH Baluchitherium/John Mayall Steppin Out/Aerosmith The Movie etc)

and yes there is some Gospel that should find it’s way on there. Don’t be scared y’all. It won’t hurt.

  60. I can’t argue with most of this but…
Van Halen, eruption is only a bit over a minute in length, it’s usually tied up with ”you really got me’. Hot for teacher is a better option if we are limited to a 5 pack. Van Halen is better served as a 12pack
Eruption with you really got me

    Hot for teacher

    Dreams

    Panama

    Spanish fly

    Could this be magic

    Ice cream man

    Pretty woman

    Mean streets

    Jump

    Runnin’ with the devil

    Beat it

    1. I keep hoping for a Van Halen pack like the Jimmy Hendrix pack. Give me it all. So much to learn from Eddie.

      1. Man, there’s so much needed from Van Halen, I think any pack wouldn’t do them justice.

Include everything on your list plus
        Unchained
        Poundcake
        DOA
Can’t Get This Stuff No More
        5150
        Everybody Wants Some
        Drop Dead Legs
Baluchitherium would be amazing to learn
        You and Your Blues
        Cabo Wabo
how about some acoustic VH with Could This Be Magic

  61. Love the movie Heavy Metal . . . and I would love to have a chance to play the songs

    Heavy Metal – Sammy Hagar
    Radar Rider &Heartbeat – Riggs
Veteran of Psychic Wars – BOC
Heavy Metal (Takin’ a Ride) – Don Felder
    Crazy – Nazareth

and my absolute favorite . . . All of You – Don Felder

As for the bands that might be too expensive, would it be feasible to charge more per song?
I am not a fan of paying more, but if it means getting some of my all time fav’s, I’d do it.

  62. Nice list; Live would be a great pack! My fav requested DLC would be “Rancid” ( “old friend, fall back down, roots radicals” and more). BTW

  63. I love your picks of Chuck Barry and Journey. Would love to see some Ozzy, Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, and some old blues classics like John Lee Hooker or Buddy Guy.

  64. Would love Goo Goo Dolls. My big concern, however, is that their work is a wee bit infamous for their unusual tunings. “Iris” is BDDDDD, a tuning that I’m pretty certain would make any guitarist feel anxious about the condition of their guitar’s B-string.

  65. I agree “no love for punk”. Please add in a 5 pack sprinkled with Sex Pistols, Iggy & the Stooges, Buzzcocks, MC5 & Patti Smith. I love the list BTW!

    1. throw some pre-crossover D.R.I and C.o.C, Early SUI, Bad Brains, & Bad Religion (No Control) to bridge the gap between the old school and the bubble gum punk they have today

  66. Apart from the obvious Pink Floyd etc…

I would love to see some Dinosaur Jr, actual punk (fun!) and now I come to think of it also Zappa, Buddy Holly, Robert Cray, Sonic Youth…

Maybe it’s a good thing they have gaps in the DLC, it leaves me with some money in my wallet.

  67. Some Eagles, Peter Frampton, Genesis, The Band, Gary Moore, Grand Funk, Zakk Wilde, CKY, The Guess Who would be nice

  68. While I’m not a big fan of the Beatles, it does seem like a major hole. And yeah – the obvious list. Metallica, AC/DC, Pink Floyd (PLEASE!!!!), etc. Here are some others:

Yngwie Malmsteen – I mean, come on! If you want 80s shred – okay, Van Halen is a bigger hole, but next up would be Yngwie Malmsteen and then Steve Vai.

Dragonforce would be a modern shredding hole for songs that everybody wants to try but nobody can play. A 3-pack would be sufficient.

The Eagles – another obvious hole. Some brilliant guitar work there from the 70s (and early 80’s?). And hey – Hotel California!

And Dire Straits. I’m sure they’ve already been contacted, but man… we need some Mark Knopfler finger-picking goodness!

Otherwise, my list probably looks a lot like yours – plus we need *more* B.B. King, Albert King, Styx, Def Leppard, Stevie Ray Vaughn,

  69. I’ll always request Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, and 13th Floor Elevators for some psychedelic love, but here are my choices for bigger names.

Nada Surf, Built to Spill, Sonic Youth for the 90’s. Nada Surf is a simple, easy to learn alternative rock act similar to older Weezer tracks. Built to Spill is for the skilled guitarist. Sonic Youth may be a little too experimental and effects heavy to work in Rock Smith, but they changed the musical landscape.

Dum Dum Girls, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Mac Demarco for 00’s. The first 2 acts play simple pop/rock, similar to the beginner skill level of the Nada Surf suggestion above. Mac Demarco for the aspiring lead guitarist.

And lastly my dream The Smiths 5 pack
“Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want”
    “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”
“There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”
    “Big Mouth Strikes Again”
    “Cemetery Gates”

    1. Definitely down for some Mac Demarco. Sonic Youth (I need to request Teenage Riot) and Pains of Being Pure at Heart could be fun too. And the Smiths if RS can get them.

    1. It’s always amazing to come back to this website after not visiting for a while and see that harassing people about requesting songs is still your reason for living.

  70. Jimmy Eat World was my main jam back in high school and I still have a lot of good feelings for them, but honestly the songs I’d be most excited for, like “Work,” “Kill,” and “23” are kind of long shots.

Also, Joan Jett, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen are majorly unfortunate omissions from earlier decades.

  71. You forgot Blind Melon, RHCP and Stone Temple Pilots for 90s. They already have songs in game so why not a pack. All these bands could please guitar and bass player. Also more funk ,blues, and punk would be nice. Bandfuse had distillers and bad religion. Why not rocksmith?

  72. Missed Seven wonders for Fleetwood Mac. And no shout out for when the music died!? Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper pack?! So much music out there and so little time!!!!!!! Like you said when we were younger we had to find tabs the hard way! Now we have the access but “time is not on our side!” Hey another song you can add to the list! 😉

  73. In my opinion there’s still not enough blues. Blues is what made the electric guitar famous and were lacking big time.

  74. IMHO, the most glaring Rock omissions are Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. And I like the Chuck Berry idea.

Quite a few of the 90s/00s ideas are just chugging on some power chords for 3.5 minutes. As much as I like some of those artists, I can imagine their Rocksmith charts to be pretty boring. Rocksmith already has plenty of representation from radio pop music. If you like these songs, then put some headphones on and chug power chords from Ultimate-guitar.com to the radio.

If the goal of this game is to learn and study playing the guitar then there has to be more representation from the blues and jazz – this is a pretty glaring under-representation. The guitar is synonymous with American Blues music, yet there are only a few tracks from that style. Not a single jazz song (unless you count the Mozart arrangement). One idea for some DLC that wouldn’t require licensing would be to release some tracks that taught some standard Blues/Jazz licks/turnarounds. Those are the kind of things you need to learn and memorize to become truly proficient at the guitar.

    1. I would love a whole pack about solo riffs, and ideas on how to improvise in session mode.

Absolutely agree about jazz and blues. Gary Clark Jr. is easily my favorite track in the entire game.

    2. Josh I posted before I read your contribution. I couldn’t agree more about Jazz and Blues-based music (see above), of course some people have a strong antipathy towards Jazz.

I like your idea of a licks/turnarounds download, some Bachsmith-style arrangements of Jazz standards would be another option. Perhaps songs from Blues-based Jazz artists (Grant Green springs to my mind) would have the likeliest chance of being popular.

  75. Not one funk artist in the list. I am disappoint.

Would definitely love some Parliament/Funkadelic. Some Isley Brothers would be awesome too. Sly & The Family Stone would be great. Heck, Prince would be a great addition. That man could PLAY.

  76. Great list – I would buy everything list here, pre-90’s – lol.

And despite these holes in the play list, there a tons of acts that only have 1 song in game that need their own 3-5 pack….Toto, Hall and Oats, Chicago, Twisted Sister, Motorhead, etc.

Maybe we will get them one day, but I’m getting tired of waiting 🙁

  77. I love your suggestions. One song i would add for Jimmy Eat world is “Sweetness”. It may be easy, but it is a great song.

    1. Agreed! They have a ton of great songs but I tried to not make the dream pack too “Bleed Merica” heavy.
